Day 3

April 8, 2012 - Out Day, Potter Lake to Canoe Lake

Even deep in the interior of Algonquin Park, the Easter Bunny found us and we hunted for chocolate eggs while waiting for the coffee to perk. We were all leaving today but with the sun out and shining we had a leisurely breakfast. I even made two pots of coffee so we could finish the last of the Baileys. It was oatmeal and bagels for me, but I watched in awe as Brandon threw an entire pound of bacon in a cast iron skillet. He cooked it all up while Paul made the oatmeal for them. I noticed he had an entire 2 Kg bag of brown sugar. They must really like brown sugar – might want to think about cutting back, if only to save your back on the portages!

The tear down of tents and packing of gear finally started and canoes started leaving here and there. Markus and I were the second to leave about 11:45 AM. It was easier heading downstream and with the wind at our backs. There was lots of scraping on rocks and shallow spots. The day was getting to be quite warm as well, I’m glad I had my ball cap handy.

It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed winding our way down creek. Even the portages seemed pleasant as they were fairly short and it was nice to get out of the sun for a bit. Markus and I had some sort of hawk circling overhead for a few minutes, we couldn’t identify it however. Then we saw two birds that must have been courting/mating, they were doing acrobatics like you wouldn’t believe and at some points appeared as if it was one bird they were so close to each other. It was quite interesting to watch.

After a taking a short break at the end of the 390m portage with Jeffrey and Stainless we continued on under a sunny sky. Paul and the boys arrived with their first load just as we were leaving. With the wind at our back it was a quick trip down Canoe Lake. There were more people about at cottages than when we went in, taking advantage of the great Easter weather I imagine.

We were onshore and packing up the vehicles about 3:30 PM. Again Paul and crew arrived just as we were finishing up. A round of good-byes and I was on the highway with only a quick stop for gas and a burger with Markus and Jeffrey in Huntsville. I found it very windy on the way home and the clouds seemed to be building up, not that it mattered now that another great camping trip was complete.
